Portlandia meets Halloween

I’m doing some housekeeping on this long weekend, and rounding up photos from my hoop journey has been a priority. Here are some snaps from opening day 2012 in Portland, which nicely coincided with Halloween! Portland turned out to be one of the nicer surprises during my travels.

Boston Freaks (from the archives)

Another playoff game photo gallery from last season; this one taken from the Celts- Hawks series. I didn’t realize how many fans come in costume at the TD Northbank Center Garden (or whatever it’s called these days). It made for pretty awesome people watching:

I wasn't kidding...

Celeb spotting at the Knicks Playoff Game (from the archives)

Reggie Miller and Chris Mullin, two Hall of Famers and former teammates laughing it up before the game.

With the Knicks about to head into game 7 of a crucial playoff series, I thought it was time to update my post from last year’s Knicks-Heat playoff game (the first playoff series the Knicks had been in since the 1990s). The Heat won the game, but the Knicks had all the celebs in place.

California Dreaming

These images were taken from a jaunt through all three California NBA arenas and one baseball stadium in April and May of 2012:

There were almost as many players on the field at this Oakland A's home game as there were people in the stands.

The Philly, New York, Toronto Experience

More from my East Coast swing. This started with an Allman Brothers show at the Beacon theater in New York, then a train ride to Philly to see the Knicks stomp all over the Sixers and finally, a flight to Toronto to watch the Raptors take on the Knicks.  A detour on the way to catch my flight back to London took me to Niagra Falls, of all places. Keep scrolling down to check out the once in a lifetime vista I got to witness.

A full hour's worth of haggling got me a pretty decent spot at the Wells Fargo Arena in Philly, home of the best food in the NBA, hands down.

A formidable collection of Philly greats, including my all time favorite NBA player and childhood hero, Julius "Dr. J" Erving

Knicks fans in slight disarray. They were the vocal majority that night.

Carolina On My Mind

Here are some pics from my trip that kicked off on March 18th. I started by hitting two second round NCAA Tourney games in Greensboro, NC and then a trip to Charlotte on the 19th to see the putrid Bobcats play the Sixers. I have two uber-cool cousins working on graduate degrees, one at Duke and the other at UNC Chapel Hill. How could I resist visiting both campuses?

Banners for Duke fans, target practice for UNC fans.

Cameron Indoor 'Stadium'.... shockingly small. If this is a Stadium then what's Wembley?

Yeah, I know, it's totally wrong. But let's face it, it's a cool shot.

Alaa Abdelnaby and I are now the only two Arabs to tip off at Duke.

The Midwestern Tour, in Pictures

Harley Rider Club badges from around the world, including my peeps from Bahrain and Cairo represented at the Harley Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Well hello there my friends. Apologies for the extended absence. I’ve been hunkering down in my man cave plotting my travel itinerary and listening to a lot of Southern Rock.  In the meantime, I thought I’d share some photos from my last trip in February.

Does anyone really associate Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with Milwaukee? Well, he did start his career in the Midwest, won an MVP, then claimed the city did not "fit his cultural needs" and bolted (sound familiar?). It was very cool to see his jersey up in the Bradley Center though.

Shanghai Surprise

Sorry about the title. I had to. Really, what other opportunity would I have to recount one of the worst movies in history (2.7/10 on IMDB).  A movie so bad, Madonna looked like the veteran actor in the ensemble.

At any rate, my surprise in Asia’s land of the smog appeared on the bustling pedestrian shopping zone, Nanjing Road. I came across a sign that said ‘NBA Store On Sale’.

This doesn't look like the 5th Avenue store to me. Even the logo is a bit off.

I walked in to find what looked like a Woolworth only with different stations selling discounted gear. One of those was festooned with cheap looking NBA signs and authentic NBA gear piled high on shelves, in baskets and on racks.
